In 2010 Salvatore obtained a BSc Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Catania, Italy. The experimental project for the draft of the final dissertation, titled “Molecular signals in the 3’ UTR of oocyte-specific transcripts and their biological role”, was carried out at Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Catania. He also obtained a MSc Degree in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnologies from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2013. His MSc thesis titled “Proteomic analysis of factors released by Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells” was performed with the Proteomic and System Biology Group at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) of Pisa, Italy. In this work an untargeted proteomics approach was exploited to characterize vesicles released by Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs) and a preliminary protein profile for microvesicles and exosomes of different cell phenotypes was obtained. The data have been published in the scientific journal Molecular ByoSystems.
Role in the Project
Salvatore joined the University of Dundee as a Marie Curie ESR fellow on the PHOtonic tools for Quantitative imaging in tissUeS (PHOQUS) project in August 2014. His work leads to the exploration and combination of different non-invasive laser-based techniques in order to establish novel surrogate markers for the preclinical assessment of Cardiovascular Disease risk.
